I have always thought that an artist cannot be trusted to write a definitive statement regarding his or her own work.
Rarely does the written statement take into consideration the subconscious element at work during the creative process. My own work for example, may change in meaning for me through time.
I may also make connections in the imagery that I was unaware of at the time of creation. Another part to the equation is the viewer.
I have always maintained that the viewer's interpretation of my work is as valid as my own and I try to ensure that I do not discount this when writing my statements.
