Artist Statement for
"Aeternus Proelium"

"Aeternus Proelium" which translated from its Latin means "Eternal Battle," was the first canvas work based upon the work done for the HBO series, "Sex Bytes 2.5." The foundation work I did with the eight models as documented by the HBO cameras in May of 1997, served as the starting point for this series.

"Aeternus Proelium" shows an aged and broken fresco depicting an epic battle between the two extreme forces of humanity, the forces of good and evil. Raging against each other within a crazed and frenzied batting of wings the separate armies clash in an eternal embrace of sword and spear, fighting for the very heart of man.

Overlaid upon this ancient fresco is a modern image of humanity framed in rusted iron. Cowering together as if to shield themselves against the terrible battle that appears to rage all around them, the figures intertwine until they become one single entity. The images, one of conflict the other of love and unification, play off one another to show that the struggle rages within as well as outside of the central figures. I also wanted to some signs of resignation and defeat within the figures of the central panel. An image of lost faith, lost hope.

This painting is one of struggle. A building block of what it is to be human. A   torrent of conflicting emotions, desires, and actions that is inherent within the gift of free will. The final thought I hope one walks away with is the unification of this inner struggle and by connecting to our fellow man we may find peace from the ravages of this internal warfare.
